TMC College Students’ Field Trip to Little India

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On 17th March 2017, our TMC College students went on an experiential learning field trip to Little India. Little India was chosen not only for how well it represented various forms of tourism, but also because it serves as a counterpoint to the built-around-tourism Kampong Glam; since Little India is inherently a community that actively fights against its own popularity as a tourist destination to retain its local identity.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]The trip served multiple purposes; the first of which was for the Combined Humanities students to see Tourism in a real-world context. The students were to draw on their prior knowledge and what they had studied in class about the different forms of tourism, to try and understand how the different elements in Little India drew various groups of people. They would also attempt collection of primary data through simple experiments and interviews. This was meant to serve as an introduction to Geographical Investigations skills, which is the foundation for practical field work.

The second purpose of the excursion was also to help all the students to improve their English oral and listening skills through the interviews and brief conversations with people other than their classmates and teachers. Another outcome that we hoped for, was that the plethora of new sensory experiences would enhance students’ imaginations for the sake of creative writing.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]

They were also divided into teams; they would travel in these smaller groups to complete their objectives so that there could be easier and more purposeful bonding between the students from different classes. This also provided an opportunity to for some students with identifiable leadership and facilitation skills to develop and grow in their strengths by taking on responsibility over their peers. Despite some of their doubts regarding a lack of direction sense and map-reading abilities, the students were eager to set off to find the various landmarks assigned to them. Many of them found out on this trip that they were not in good physical shape, and expressed a need to balance their lifestyles with more exercise. However, they persevered to complete all their stops, including some bonus locations intentionally further out in the vicinity of Farrer Park MRT station.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text]
