About Anglia Ruskin University
Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) story starts in 1858, when the art critic, patron and philanthropist John Ruskin opened Cambridge School of Art. The art school grew to become Anglia Ruskin University, shortened to ARU, and it’s still at the heart of the modern-day campus in Cambridge. Becoming ARU Over the years, a number of colleges and institutes have become part of ARU. They include the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology (CCAT) and the Essex Institute of Higher Education (formerly the Chelmer Institute – itself formed from the Mid-Essex Technical College and the rentwood College of Education). At first, these colleges combined to become Anglia Polytechnic, and then Anglia Polytechnic University in 1992.

ARU Milestones
We're proud to have received a Gold award for the quality of our education in the Teaching Excellence Framework, a UK-wide review of university teaching standards.
We were also named Times Higher Education University of the Year 2023, and University of the Year at the Social Mobility Awards in October 2023.
Anglia Ruskin is also ranked 601 - 800 in World University Ranking 2026, Times Higher Education.
