Hawthorn Language School
Hawthorn Language School is an learning centre within TMC Academy.
The Hawthorn English Programme was established by the University of Melbourne, Australia, in 1986. In 2003, TMC Academy took on the franchise of Hawthorn Singapore, as part of the worldwide network of Hawthorn Language Centres. From 2009, Hawthorn Singapore became fully independent under TMC Academy, and continues to deliver the same rigorous and high quality English programmes under the brand name Hawthorn Language School.

Get a head start at Hawthorn Language School by developing a strong foundation as you hone your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. We also offer a preparatory course for the IELTS examination upon request.
Certificate in English
The Certificate in English programme consists of nine levels from Beginner to Advanced. At the lower language levels, the emphasis is almost entirely on General English, while ensuring a smooth transition to the subsequent EAP (English for Academic Purposes) component.

General English follows a syllabus of grammatical, lingual, phonological, textual and functional/contextual language, featured in an integrated and carefully planned sequence. Through student-centred tasks and projects of increasing complexity, this leads into the Academic English unit and also prepares students to become independent and self-directed learners.

Academic English covers a range of language skills and activities specific to academic contexts, including reading for gist, summarising, listening to lectures, essay and report-writing, and making presentations. Study skills includes note-taking, getting and transferring information from text, tables and diagrams, summarising arguments, planning papers and dissertations and where appropriate IT skills.

Hawthorn Teachers Profile
HAWTHORN ENGLISH TEACHER
Andrew is a Language Pathfinder who believes that the more languages you know, the more opportunities to find what you’re looking for in life you get.

(People say that there is only one true soulmate for everyone, however, nobody says that your soulmate must speak your own language, right?!)

Andrew likes to mix the traditional approaches to language learning with technological advances (as in, who needs a dictionary when you have Google translate on your phone!). In a classroom away from a classroom, blogging is a good way to practice or improve your writing skills; Instagram works best with the correct hashtags so you better expand your vocabulary; and in the days of Siri, Alexa, or Cortana, you can practice speaking with your own phone.
Andrew realizes that there is no perfect way for learning a language, or anything else, but as long as it is fun, students will enjoy their time in the classroom, will make new friends, and, will learn something for themselves along the way.
