Updated: Jun 30

The Singapore economy grew 2.7 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2024

The services, wholesale and retail trade, and transportation and storage sectors collectively expanded by 2.7 per cent, accelerating from 1.0 per cent growth in the last quarter of 2023.

Information and communications, finance, and insurance sectors grew by 4.2 per cent, faster than the 3.6 per cent growth of the previous quarter.

Bachelor of Business - Learning business to build business

One consequence of the growth in the Singaporean economy is the ongoing need for business leaders with relevant qualifications, knowledge, and interpersonal communication skills who can contribute to businesses' strategic success.

With the growth of business demand, studying a business qualification with TMC Academy provides a solid foundation for a successful career in the business world. TMC Academy offers three Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Business Degrees in different areas. These degrees emphasise skills development and sound practical industry knowledge, preparing students to enter the workforce and contribute to the industry.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Business and Management (Top-Up)

The BA (Hons) Business and Management (Top Up) programme is a final-year degree programme covering key aspects of the theory and practice of business and management.

Business, particularly management, requires having the skills, knowledge, and emotional intelligence to lead and manage people effectively. This degree recognises the importance of this and emphasises developing individual and group skills that will equip leaders to lead teams effectively.

Students who complete this degree will also have the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute effectively to a range of business operational and/or strategic contexts.

The degree is awarded by the University of Northampton.

Core Modules.

The curriculum for this course has been developed in conjunction with the TMC Academy Industry Advisory Board (IAB). Consequently, the core modules are specifically designed to align with current industry practices and emerging trends rather than theoretical knowledge based on business practices from the 1990s and early 2000s.

For example, one of the core modules is the social responsibilities of business. In today’s economy, a business's environmental, social, and governance (ESG) responsibilities are essential to its success and growth.

Another core module is Strategic Human Resource Management. In most businesses, the greatest costs are HR and people management costs. Failure to effectively manage HR and employees can lead to increased costs with staff turnover, re-employing new staff, and taking the time to induct and train new staff. All these costs can impact the profitability of the business.

Other core modules include:

  • Principles of Marketing Management

  • Strategic Management

  • Accounting and Finance for Managers

  • Business Project

This degree can be completed in nine months on a full-time basis or thirteen months part-time.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) International Logistics and Trade Finance (Top-Up)

Singapore is a global logistics hub. There are three main reasons for this.

• Connections—Singapore’s local market is relatively small, so developing high-frequency connections to hundreds of destinations worldwide results from a deliberate, proactive expansion policy led by the government. For example, Singapore has over 30 trade agreements that provide access to major markets worldwide.

• Innovative Infrastructure and processes – Singapore is always thinking ahead and planning for the future. An example of this forward-thinking is the Next Generation Port, which, when completed in 2030, will be able to process the equivalent of 65 million standard shipping containers, making it the largest integrated facility in the world.

• Encouraging Private Sector participation – the Singaporean government has intentionally created an environment that attracts private sector participation and overseas investors. Twenty of the world’s top 25 logistic companies manage their global or regional operations out of Singapore.

Given that Singapore is such a global logistics hub, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) International Logistics and Trade Finance (Top-Up) through TMC Academy makes good sense for a student seeking a career in this exciting and forward-thinking industry.

This qualification is a final-year degree programme that provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective logistics and supply chain managers and supervisors.

The course considers the micro and macro skills necessary to succeed in logistics from an international perspective, emphasising the economic, political, and financial risk factors affecting the world economy.

Students who successfully complete this course are awarded the degree through the University of Northampton.
