The Certificate in Elementary Chinese course provides students with the fundamental skills in learning Chinese (Mandarin), understanding the pronunciation of Chinese character and sentence structure. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to engage in a short meaningful conversation in Chinese.

Duration
Level 1: 4 lessons (16 hours), 4 hours per lesson, once a week
Level 2: 4 lessons (16 hours), 4 hours per lesson, once a week
Level 3: 4 lessons (16 hours), 4 hours per lesson, once a week

  1. INTRODUCTION
    Students will be introduced to the formation of Chinese characters, pronounciation and sentence structure.
  2. PHONETIC PRONOUNCIATION
    Students will be introduced to the Chinese Phonetical Pronounciation (Han Yu Pin Ying), keywords and phrases for greetings.
  3. GREETINGS
    Students will be introduced to the terms and phrases for greetings between friends.
  4. FORMAL INTRODUCTIONS
    Students will be introduced to proper formal terms and salutations, as well as sentence structures for formal greetings.
  5. COMMUTING AND TRAVELLING
    Students will be introduced to the different forms of transportation and sentence structures to be used for asking directions.
  6. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
    Students will form a small group with a facilitator on a short trip to a shopping mall to apply what they have learned to a realistic situation.
  7. ROLE-PLAY
    Students will be given the opportunity to put together their knowledge gained into a performance, with the guidance of the facilitators and teachers.
  8. ASSESSMENT FOR LEVEL 1
    Students will be given oral examinations, group and individual assignments to assess their learning.
  1. MAKING AN ENQUIRY
    Students will be introduced to keywords and phrases for making an enquiry.
  2. ACCEPTING INVITATIONS
    Students will be introduced on how to respond to an invitation in a polite manner.
  3. ENQUIRING ABOUT TIME
    Students will be introduced to the terms and phrases on enquiring about time.
  4. EXPRESSING APPRECIATION
    Students will be introduced to proper terms and phrases to express gratitute and reciprocate to an invitation.
  5. HEALTHY LIFESTYLES
    Students will be introduced to the terms and phrases to discuss healthy lifestyles and activities.
  6. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
    Students will form a small group with a facilitator on a short trip to a shopping mall to apply what they have learned to a realistic situation.

  3. TALKING ABOUT FOOD
    Students will be introduced to keywords and sentence structures for talking about “food”.
  4. TALKING ABOUT SCHOOL LIFE
    Students will be introduced to keywords and sentence structures for talking about “school life”.
  5. TALK ABOUT TIME AND WEATHER
    Students will be introduced to keywords and sentence structures for talking about “time and weather”.
  6. TALKING ABOUT DOCTORS AND ACTORS/ACTRESS
    Students will be introduced to keywords and sentence structures for talking about “careers”.
  7. TALKING ABOUT HOBBIES
    Students will be introduced to keywords and sentence structures for talking about “hobby”.
  8. FAREWELL
    Students will be asked to write sentences on themselves and friends/family, school life, job and hobbies, weather and time and order
    food.
