My Visit to University of Northampton, UK
Principal Lecturer at TMC Academy School of Business and Law, Mr Raymond Loh, pens down his experience visiting the University of Northampton for an Academic Partnership Conference.
This autumn, I had the opportunity to visit Liverpool and Northampton from 11 to 22 September 2017. I was in Liverpool for my further studies at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). While in Northampton, I attended and presented a research paper at University of Northampton (UN) inaugural Academic Partnership Conference.
The Academic Partnership Conference was held in the spacious university ground at Park Campus. There were more than 90 participants who attended the 2 days conference. These include UN staff (academic and support staff) and partners from different parts of the world. The theme of the conference relates to equipping students with positive students experience in their learning and the various presentations dealt on a number of areas that include UN sharing with partners how to build in positive students experience in their learning and on the on-campus life. I presented a research paper on “Understanding Asian learners and learning behavior” to share with the audience not only on why Asian students exhibit some learning characteristics, but also suggest learning strategies to reach out more to students and enable them to learn better. An extract of the presentation can be found here.
While gaining knowledge is one part of the conference, the real benefit of the conference is the opportunity to network, which was invaluable. While we may know our University partners and may have seen them on Skype, not many of us have the chance to have a face-to-face contact. The joy of having exchange warm handshakes, name cards and engage in “small talks” truly strengthen the relationships much further. I had the opportunity to meet with staff from several faculties that include Marketing as part of School of Business and Law, Logistics, IT and even Psychology. In addition to the formal conference, several “drop-in” sessions were conducted, where it allow the chance for participants to ask questions with UN representatives from the Library, NILE (UN e-learning platform) and students’ admission.
UN will soon be shifting its campus from the spacious campus to a brand new campus, located at the heart of Northampton city. The city not only offers greater convenience, more fundamentally, it is the shift towards blended learning as it aims to pursue a more student-centric learning experience. UN can therefore be summarised as a progressive modern university that meets the increasing demand of its students to be equipped with 21st century competency.
