This degree is offered under the LJMU Summer Semester Programme which offers students a unique opportunity to complete their degree by studying the Summer Semester in LJMU. LJMU has been ranked number one for tourism, leisure and hospitality by the Times Good University Guide.

This degree helps equip students with the knowledge and skills required to make the most of the opportunities on offer in the Hospitality and Tourism industry.

It is designed to build upon existing skills and knowledge, drawing upon the expertise of the staff at TMC and LJMU in areas such as event management, sustainable tourism and urban tourism.

The final year top-up degree consists of a total of 5 modules:

 

STAGE 1:
1 month period of blended learning study at TMC Academy,  consisting of 5 days intensive teaching by the flying University staff and distance learning activity delivered by the University. 

Research Method

This module will critically evaluate the ways in which the analysis of secondary sources and the production and interpretation of primary data may illuminate potential topics of research within tourism, leisure & hospitality. It will also analyse the nature and relative merits of quantitative and qualitative methodology and to critically evaluate a range of research methods with regard to their application within tourism, leisure & hospitality

Assessment: 100% Coursework (3000 words essay)

 

STAGE 2:
15 week Summer Semester programme inLiverpool John Moores University, UK 

Strategy and change in the workplace

This module is to enable the student to understand strategic planning and change management in the workplace. Critically analyse the strategic planning within organisations. Critically respond to a range of change management models. Critically evaluate a management change issue relating to an organisation and apply theory to practice.

Assessment: 100% Coursework (Strategic Report)

Individual Research Study in Tourism Leisure & Hospitality

To enable the student to study in depth a topic from within the field of tourism, leisure or hospitality. Design an enquiry into a relevant topic which utilises and applies knowledge and understanding developed during the programme of study. Students need to undertake a literature review and demonstrate a sound knowledge of the topic and an ability to critically analyse and evaluate data and concepts. Evaluate the findings and draw appropriate conclusions and make recommendations for further research in the field.

Assessment: 100% Coursework (10% Proposal, 90% Dessertation)

The Tourism and Hospitality Consumer

The module aims to critically evaluate approaches to understanding the hospitality and tourism consumer and analyse strategies and practices designed to respond to their needs. Critically evaluate and apply the theories and concepts underpinning consumer behaviour within hospitality and tourism contexts. Analyse the needs and expectations of different hospitality consumers and develop appropriate processes and services and Analyse the quality of the service encounter and its impact on the hospitality /tourism consumer and the service provider.

Assessment: 100% Coursework (5000 words report)

 

STAGE 3:
4-month period of distance learning activity delivered by the University and undertaken by the individual student from a location in accordance with their residencyor visa status in Singapore. 

Current issues in Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality

To develop and extend students' opportunities to investigate current and contemporary issues of debate within the diverse tourism, leisure and hospitality industry. Apply knowledge and critical understanding to current and contemporary issues. Formulate evidence-based support or contradiction on current topics and issues through presentation and debate.

Assessment: 100% Coursework (60% Essay, 40% Presentation)

Structure

Delivery

This programme is delivered in Singapore and the UK through LJMU’s summer semester programme. The delivery model of the course is as follows:

Stage 1: A 1-month period of blended learning study in TMC consisting of 5 days intensive teaching by the flying University staff and distance learning activity delivered by the University.

Stage 2: A 15-week Summer Semester in Liverpool John Moores University, United Kingdom.

Stage 3: A 4-month period of distance learning activity delivered by the University and undertaken by the individual student from a location in accordance with their residency or visa status in Singapore.

There will be a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, presentations and sessions in computer laboratories where appropriate. Students will also be given additional work to complete outside of scheduled classes.

Resources and materials provided for students will include lecture notes and references for further reading in books, professional journals, publication, articles and websites.

* The admission to the programme is subject to the approval of Singapore student pass and UK VISA

Important Information

UK VISA and alternate programmes

TMC will assist with the UK VISA application for international students who would need a VISA to enter into the UK. Students must be clear that the UK VISA application is subjected to UK Border Agency and is not within the authority of TMC Academy or Liverpool John Moores University.

International students whose VISA application is not successful have a few alternatives:
1. Appeal to the UK Border Agency (which is subjected to their approval authority)
2. Second VISA application in student’s home country
3. Enrol in an alternative programme. The possible pathways are as such:

For Hospitality and Tourism students

University of Gloucestershire (offered in TMC Academy, Singapore)

Student Pass

TMC will apply the international student pass with the Immigrations and Checkpoint Authority of Singapore (ICA) for the full course duration. Student pass application is subjected to the ICA’s approval.

The student pass will be cancelled when the student is going to the UK for the summer semester. The student pass will be re-applied by TMC for students to return to Singapore for the last stage of the programme. The re-application of the student pass is also subjected to the ICA’s approval.

Affected international students are still able to complete their course in their home country with full support from the University.

 

Refund of fee for LJMU (Top Up) Programmes

In the event of  unsuccessful Singapore Student Pass application before commencement of  Stage 1*:

  • Refund of £500 course fees paid to LJMU
  • SG course fees are not payable

In the event of unsuccessful UK VISA for Stage 2* and student has not attended the Stage 1 programme:

  • Refund of £500 (Stage 1 course fees) paid to LJMU
  • Balance GBP course fees are not payable or will be fully refunded
  • Airfare and other administrative fees of SGD4000 will be deducted from the SG course fees paid and the balance will be refunded

In the event of unsuccessful UK VISA for Stage 2* and student has attended the Stage 1 programme:

  • £500 (Stage 1 course fees) will not be refunded
  • Refund of balance GBP course fees paid to LJMU
  • Airfare and other administrative fees of SGD4000 will be deducted from the SG course fees paid and the balance will be refunded

In the event of unsuccessful Singapore Student Pass application for Stage 3*:

  • Refund of S$2500 (applicable if attendance rate for Stage 1* is at least 90%).
  • No refund (if attendance rate for Stage 1* is less than 90%).

In the event of voluntary decision not to return to Singapore for Stage 3*

  • No refund


Stage 1:

Stage 2: 15‐week summer semester programme in Liverpool John Moores University, United Kingdom.
