In this day and age, information is communicated through more avenues than ever before. Content can be heard, watched and experienced through numerous mediums. From the traditional mediums like television and radio to new mediums like websites, podcasts live streams and blogs. And with social networking taking off in the last 5 years, content development and management that has taken years to evolve has been redefined in a short period of time. The Mass Communications interest area offers students an understanding of the exciting and always changing effects of how culture, economics and even politics can be affected by the mass media. It also delves into the process of how to effectively create and manage content for the new media. Graduates from the Mass Communications field are always in demand and move on to successful and diverse careers ranging from Advertising Executives, Broadcast News Analysts, Writers and even Market Researchers. Here in TMC we lay the foundation for our students’ success. Small classes and close faculty interaction allow our students to investigate in depth all aspects of the mass communication process. School publications like the Quarterly Crunch are one of the many areas in which students from the mass communications field gain invaluable hands on experience, other such opportunities include producing films, documentaries and multimedia projects, creating advertising strategy and pitching public relations tactics. Whether you are a student, parent, faculty member, or just contemplating embarking on a career in Mass Communications, I warmly welcome you to the School of Arts & Humanities (Department of Mass Communications). Looking forward to seeing you in class!

Media communications are becoming increasingly central to our everyday lives and their intersection with the social, political and commercial spheres are of growing significance to our globalising world. The industry has seen tremendous growth, especially with popular culture being one of the most lucrative commodities in modern times. Top this with the ever-changing digital technology, there has never been a stronger need to stay relevant. The Mass Communication programme in TMC has proven to produce this generation’s movers and shakers - individuals with good media communication sense and multimedia knowledge. Not only will it explore how both the local and the global are juxtaposed through the media, it also allows for the study of media communications within regional and international contexts, allowing students to expand beyond their cultural boundaries. Prepped professionally by industry-qualified lecturers, these students will aptly develop proficiency in research and critical thinking abilities among many other lifelong skills.
