Upon completion of the course, students will sit for the Singapore–Cambridge General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level Examination which is conducted annually. Awarded by the Ministry of Education, the certification will allow students to apply for admission to polytechnics in Singapore as well as overseas institutions.

TMC’s Preparatory Courses for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations also include an elective module that prepares students for another similar examination, Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE).

IGCSE is the one of the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. It is recognised by leading universities and employers worldwide, and is an international passport to progression and success. Students who wish to study outside Singapore after ‘O’ level may choose to take the elective module, IGCSE Preparation.

Course Assessment

Students are assessed by means of oral and written tests and examinations during the course. Upon completion of the course, students will sit for the AEIS test conducted by MOE.

Oral examination: July/August
Practical & written examination: October to November

Module Description

ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Students are taught to speak, write and present fluently and accurately in varied and relevant types of texts using wide ranging and precise vocabulary and accurate grammar, punctuation and spelling. They are also enabled to understand and respond to texts at literal and inferential levels.

CHINESE / MALAY
These subjects develop the ability to use the language effectively for practical communication so as to gain insight into the culture and civilization of countries where the language is spoken. Students will be assessed on their ability to understand and respond to the spoken and written language, showing knowledge of a range and variety of vocabulary while applying grammar and structures correctly.

MATHEMATICS
Students will acquire the necessary mathematical concepts and skills for continuous learning for Mathematics and related disciplines. Topics such as Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry and Graphs are taught.

ADDITIONAL MATHEMATICS
The syllabus is intended to provide a strong foundation in algebraic manipulation skills and Mathematical reasoning skills.

PHYSICS
Students will be provided a coherent understanding of energy, matter and their inter-relationships. The subject focuses on investigating natural phenomena and then applying patterns, models, principles, theories and laws to explain the physical behaviour of the universe. There will be written and practical examinations.

The Physics laboratory lessons are conducted at another educational institution outside TMC premises. The Physics laboratory fees are included in the TMC course fees.

PRINCIPLES OF ACCOUNTS
Students will develop an understanding of the principles and concepts of accounting and their applications in a variety of business situations. Students will acquire basic knowledge in double-entry accounts and develop the ability to prepare, present, analyse and interpret financial statements.

COMBINED HUMANITIES
Students are required to take Geography and Social Studies.

In Social Studies, it enables students to understand issues that affect the socio-economic development, develop thinking and process skills which are essential for lifelong and independent learning.

In Geography, it emphasises the integrative study of physical and human environments and focuses on the interconnectedness among groups of people, and between people and their environment.

IGCSE Preparation
This elective module prepares the students for the IGCSE examinations in the following subjects:

•  Chinese – First Language (0509)
–  Either one:
•  English – Second Language (0510)
•  English – Second Language (0511)
–  Mathematics (0580)
–  Mathematics – Additional (0606)

Note:

1. The Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level examinations are held in October to November. The Cambridge IGCSE examinations are held in November and June.
2. Interested students who sign up for the “IGCSE Preparation” elective module shall return to TMC in January/February to start the IGCSE Preparation from January/February to May. They will then take the IGCSE examinations in June. Students who do not wish to take the elective subject, IGCSE Preparation, will complete their course with TMC in November and their student pass will be cancelled upon the completion of their course.

English Proficiency

Must have one of the following:

  • Pass Hawthorn Placement Text at Advanced 1 Level
  • Attend and pass Hawthorn Certificate in English up to Advanced 1 Level
  • IELTS Score of 5.0 or equivalent

Applicants with an English proficiency level equivalent to a pass at Hawthorn Intermediate 2 level may be admitted subject to undertaking Learning Support classes*, for which they will be charged a fee.

* Learning Support classes are conducted over 18 lessons of 1 hour 15 minutes each. Students must be able to achieve IELTS 5.0 or equivalent (one-year) and IELTS 3.5 or equivalent (two-year) at the end of the 4 weeks. Further Learning Support classes will be required if the students fail to reach the required proficiency level.

* Learning Support classes are conducted over 18 lessons of 1 hour 15 minutes each. Students must be able to achieve IELTS 5.0 or equivalent (one-year) and IELTS 3.5 or equivalent (two-year) at the end of the 4 weeks. Further Learning Support classes will be required if the students fail to reach the required proficiency level.

It is important to achieve regular attendance and meet the attendance requirement stipulated by the authorities (eg. Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore) and TMC. Failure to meet the requirement will lead to the following:

  • Rejection of Student Pass on re-application/renewal for international students.
  • Expulsion where students do not make any improvement in their attendance rate and/or consistently absent from class despite warnings and counselling given in accordance with the school policy

Attendance Requirement is as follows:

Module Attendance
For all propriety students, module attendance is required to be eligible for work to be assessed and sit for examination:

  • The minimum module attendance is normally 80% for full-time, 60% for part-time (75% for SSG-funded part-time students)
  • Special consideration will only be given to students with valid reasons.

Monthly Attendance:
All full-time international students must meet a monthly attendance of 90%. Student pass shall be subjected to cancellation if the monthly attendance is not met continuously.

Full-time local students enrolled in Hawthorn English courses, TMC College preparatory courses and external degree courses must meet a monthly attendance of 75%. Local students enrolled in external degree courses shall be subject to relevant university’s regulations regarding attendance.
