Student Feature – Seraphina Teo
What matters to you the most when choosing a school? For Seraphina Teo, a 22 year-old alumna from TMC Academy School of Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts, a conducive and effective learning environment is crucial. What she did not expect was the bonus of building friendships with international classmates that has stayed on till date. She shares her studying experience and how relevant her education at TMC Academy is to her career in this article.
Q. Why did you choose to study Hospitality & Tourism?
Before my student life in TMC Academy, I was a 17 year old that was looking for an institute that enables me to learn what I am most interested in, which was Hospitality and Tourism. I wanted to study about the world, about people and how tourism has evolved over the years. It is such a broad topic for both hospitality and tourism because there are many key aspects in it.
Q. Why did you choose to study TMC Academy?
I chose TMC because of the way lectures were carried out – in smaller class size as compared to other schools. It meant that every student can get enough attention in learning and lecturers will be able to focus on every one of us to teach and advise us on our work. This was a crucial point for me as the learning environment was important in ensuring that we were able to learn in a conducive and effective manner. We were also able to get practical experience with the use of facilities like the Accommodation room and Food & Beverage Room, which was a bonus!
Q. How would you describe student life at TMC Academy?
My student life in TMC was a memorable one. I would look forward to go for lectures, discussing about subjects and working together with my classmates on group projects. It never felt boring in class as I enjoyed the engaging lectures that constantly spark our curiosity to learn more.
Q. We heard you actively participated and organised school activities and events?
We had our own events held in the campus, which was organized by us students. An example would be the Cultural Fest where students shared their culture through food and games. I also got the chance to assist with the preparation for TMC’s MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) signing with FBMA (Food and Beverage Management Association). It was a fun way of learning and being able to use what we have learnt into planning and executing the event successfully.
Q. Share your fondest memories in school.
In TMC, we are with a good mix of international students, which enables us to learn about their culture, and at the same time allow us to understand each other better. I have thus grown closer to some of my foreigner friends even till today! It was truly a great experience for me in TMC.
Q. How has the education at TMC Academy prepared you for the workforce?
I’m currently working as a Client Executive at Regus Singapore. In the course of my work, I need to know how to communicate effectively to clients, especially if a problem arises; and how to solve issues with the right approach. I also have to market and showcase the services that my company provides, in a way that would capture the attention of potential clients. The curriculum in TMC has taught me to manage my work better, in terms of time management and delivering effective outcome. In particular, modules like ‘’ Business Management’’ and ‘’Communication & Marketing’’ has helped me manage my work effectively.
Q. We heard you have an interest in teaching…
Apart from my dream of being an entrepreneur, I also have a passion for teaching and it was inspired by my lecturers in TMC. I have always looked up to my lecturers as my mentors since school days till now. I experienced how engaging and productive the classes can be and it is something I wish to pass on to other students, and to experience this fulfilment in the teaching profession. I would like to join TMC as a teaching staff if the opportunity arises!
