Appearance is everything in Current Society

Our TMC Hawthorn English student has done various studies to support the hypothesis that people with better looks tend to have an upper hand in lives. Do you share the same thoughts?

Student Work - Appearance is Everything

is it real that good looking is an advantage?

Today I will defend the statement, “Good-looking people make more money”.

Why do I believe this statement is true?

Well, after doing some research, I found that many studies concluded that good-looking people not only get better pay, but also get hired faster.

Different studies show a difference in the amounts earned by good-looking people, as compared to average or below-average looking people. The percentage ranges from 4% to 12-14% more earnings for good-looking people.

It is not hard to imagine that it can be possible; we live in a society where looks matter. People like to be surrounded by good-looking people more than by ugly people; workplaces are not an exception. A good looking person gives a good first impression influencing what we think about that person right from the beginning. The better someone looks, the better a person we think they are.

Of course, this is speaking generally. There are professions where ‘’looking good’’ may be more monetarily beneficial than in other professions. But if two people with similar professional backgrounds, education and similar social skills compete for a position and one of them looks better, he or she probably will have a higher chance of getting the position. This theory is backed by studies which show that good-looking people give the impression of knowing more, or being more prepared to do their work than less good-looking people.

Other than getting a higher chance to be recruited and creating a positive impression to others on us, the importance of looks has affected us since we were young, and sometimes this consequence is hard to change; I’m talking about self-esteem. Good-looking people have higher self-esteem; that makes them more confident and more productive in any field, college, work, etc. this productivity and security about themselves translates into higher earnings.

So, having good looks may help us to become better students, better workers and may even help us to build our social circle easier than less good-looking people. That means that it will be easier for good looking people to make friends and talk with people since they have more social skills.

Lastly, it is well known that social relationships are fundamental in finding good work positions. Knowing as many people as possible will increase the chance to get more and better work opportunities. In the work environment, being social will benefit us. For example, the probability of recalling a sociable worker tends to be easier than a low-profile one. Therefore, should there be an internal promotion; the “outstanding” worker will have a higher chance to claim the position.

The recommendation is that if you are really bad looking, maybe, you should not choose a profession where appearance holds major importance.

My opinion is that even if good-looking people seem to have an advantage in earnings and in life, people who are less good-looking need not give up. They need to work on other characteristics, becoming more social or gaining more skills to compete. A perfect person does not exist; the balance of physical and mental characteristics is what makes us unique and valuable as a person.
